Help Wanted: NHSC Tips and Tools for Successful Clinician Recruitment

Tip 14:
Do You Have Enough Clinicians to Care for Your Community?

Regularly assess your staffing levels. You may need to hire additional primary care clinicians when:

+ There are more than 8,000 annual outpatient visits per full-time equivalent primary care physician on your staff

+ There is excessive usage of emergency room facilities for routine primary care

+ Appointment waiting time for routine health services is more than 7 days for established patients, or more than 14 days for new patients

+ Waiting-room time is longer than 1 hour for patients who have appointments or 2 hours where patients are treated on a first-come, first-served basis

Chart Note
+

Check the pulse of your clinic regularly–don’t let a shortage of clinicians reach a crisis stage when it comes to providing care for your community.

Healthy Move
+

Most residency programs end on or around July 1. Focus your efforts from the beginning of summer through fall to catch clinicians looking for jobs.
