Medical Doctors/Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine/Dentists — Residency
Here's the skinny: If you're an MD or DO, you must serve a complete residency before you can begin working in underserved communities. In addition, 17 states require a fellowship or internship before DOs can become residents. DDSs aren't required to serve as residents but are strongly encouraged to do so. During your third year of medical/dental school, you'll receive a Deferment Request Guide/Bulletin outlining residency rules. Remember that during your residency, you'll no longer receive financial support from the NHSC.

Although searching for the right residency program might make you feel like you're swimming upstream at times, there are many resources to guide you through the choppy waters:

  • Get started by checking out the Career Information section of the NHSC Web site, where you'll find tools and tips to point you in the right direction
  • Thumb through Strolling Through the Match, written for the sole purpose of helping medical students make good decisions about post-graduate training and career paths
  • Get the lowdown on the high points of community-responsive residency programs
  • Each June our annual "Unleash the Power: Using Your Residency as a Springboard to Practice" conference will help you prepare for and get the most out of your residency. Check the NHSC Web site for specifics as the time draws near

Now hear this! Make sure that by the time you finish your residency, you have the following checked off your "to do" list:

MDs/DOs

  • By the end of your 2nd MD/DO program year: Step 1 of the USMLE or Level 1 of the COMLEX
  • By the end of your 4th MD/DO program year: Step 2 (Parts I & II) of the USMLE or Level 2 of the COMLEX
  • By the end of your 1st postgraduate (residency) training program year: Step 3 of the USMLE or Level 3 of the COMLEX
  • Steps 1, 2, and 3 of the USMLE or COMLEX must be completed by all NHSC Scholars prior to completion of residency training, regardless of the requirements of the program you are completing. All NHSC Scholars must be able to perform their service commitment anywhere in the U.S. and its territories; as such, these boards are a requirement. As an NHSC Scholar, you must be flexible to go anywhere in the U.S. or its territories, wherever the need is greatest. Failure to complete your board certification can result in default on your scholarship contract.

DDSs

  • Parts 1 and 2 of the National Board Dental Examination
