Formulation of the operational concept, detailed room composition of the project, internal and external traffic flows, interdepartmental and intradepartmental relationships and operating systems. This activity sets the project's basic character and scope. |
| Space programming |
A room-by-room listing, based upon the program design, is made addressing necessary contingencies, patient flow issues and how much space is needed, e.g., if the center is in a geographical area that is difficult to access, a larger waiting room may be planned to accommodate family members. The results of the programming activity will be a reasonable estimate of the size of the facility. |
| Cost estimates |
Cost of the facility is estimated based upon the program design, space program and findings of site planning, plus comparison with similar construction/expansion projects.

| Site plan |
The site plan includes site selection, site evaluation, block plan drawings (line drawings showing gross areas, denoting relationships of departments. internal vertical and horizontal traffic flows, external pedestrian and vehicular traffic flows and expansion potential) and preparation of design drawings and specifications.

| Facility design |
Schematic drawings of the facility concept, design development that incorporates the structure, equipment and systems into the design, and construction drawings.

| Equipment/supplies planning |
The type of services available at the center and the funds available will determine the equipment and supplies needed.
