Welcome to the November issue of the NHSCurrent. Every month, the NHSCurrent will help keep you up to date and assist you through your NHSC journey.
Changes in Step 2 of the USMLE and COMLEX Examinations
A new hands-on, patient-based component to Step 2 of the USMLE and COMLEX examinations for MDs and DOs will be implemented in the 2004-2005 school year. The NHSC will cover the additional costs through Other Reasonable Costs (ORC). For more details about the new component of the examinations, go to:
Student/Resident Experiences and Rotations in Community Health (SEARCH)
Scholars have a unique opportunity to practice in underserved areas through the NHSC SEARCH program, which consists of much more than just residency programs. In fact, many States have opportunities, such as serving on interdisciplinary health care teams to problem solve real case studies, or participating in community-based projects that create new access points for an underserved community. SEARCH is about not only the importance of training, but also the overall experience. Discover more in-depth information at:

Finding the Right Residency Program
Fourth-year MDs and DOs have many options when choosing where to serve their residency, but must be careful to find a site where they can maximize the development of their skills. The NHSC Web site can help navigate you through the match process and find the residency that’s right for you:

New Scholars Conference October 2003
New Scholars from around the U.S. converged in Hunt Valley, MD, October 24th thru 26th for the annual New Scholars Conference. Staff members, facilitators, Scholars in service, NHSC Alumni, NHSC Ambassadors, and NHSC SEARCH administrators came together to take advantage of this unique opportunity to reaffirm program expectations and commitments; network beyond their disciplines and schools; and get a real sense of what it will be like to serve in areas with health care professional shortages. Those who attended found the conference to be an invaluable resource, and a good opportunity to share information and bond with one another.
Other Reasonable Costs (ORC) Updates
All Scholars should have received a copy of their Other Reasonable Costs covered by the NHSC, including books, instruments, and laboratory expenses. These figures are updated every year, so contact your ISIT branch, or click on the link below and scroll down to page 15 for further information.
