Welcome to the August issue of the NHSCurrent. Every month, the NHSCurrent helps keep you up to date and assists you through your NHSC journey.
Deferment Bulletin Coming Especially to You
All Scholars completing their medical or dental school training in 2005 or 2006 will receive the new Deferment Information Bulletin in the mail this month. Be sure to review the Bulletin-it describes the guidelines, conditions, and terms of deferment for post-graduate training (residency). It also addresses issues for physicians and dentists entering or continuing residency training between July 1, 2005, and June 30, 2006. The Bulletin will be mailed to your current address on record, so if you don't receive it in August or you require assistance, please call your analyst in the In-School/In-Training Branch at 301-594-4410 or 1-800-793-1547.
Cultural Competency Is Important to the People You Will Serve
When thinking about cultural competency training, many questions arise. Cultural differences can be defined as differences related to culture, ethnicity, race, class, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or physical condition. Look for "hands-on" training experiences through the NHSC SEARCH program:
http://nhsc.bhpr.hrsa.gov//join_us/search.cfm.
If you're looking for cultural sensitivity training, you may want to check out the North Carolina AHEC Web site for a partial listing of organizations that offer this training:

or the Cross Cultural Health Care Program training:

The Rising Tide: Words of Wisdom From the NHSC
If you are having a difficult day, ask yourself, "Why did I choose this line of work?" Let that remind you of your passion, help you focus on what's really important, and guide you as you work through the difficulties.

Spanish: ¿Qué clase de trabajo hace?
