Our Priorities for Reauthorization and Legislative Updates is the conclusion of multiple years of shared work by the National Advisory Council on The National Health Service Corps. I would like to thank all of the Council members, both current and former, for their dedication to complete this work.  I would also like to mention the hard work of B L Seamon’s Diane Fabiyi-King and Karmen Lewis, who managed the logistics for each of the Committee meetings, and Marie Bouvier of WordSculpture, who worked tirelessly during the meetings to gather all our thoughts into the report.  Additional thanks goes to Katie Previc, ASPH Public Health Fellow with the NHSC, who supplied early research and support to the Council in drafting and editing the final report.

The expertise and information from Federal staff enabled the Council the education necessary for complete understanding of the program. Presentations from Kerry Nessler, Mike Berry, Susan Salter, Cheryl Young, Ellen King, Ellen Volpe, Doug Lloyd, Elise Quinones, Andy Jordan, Bob Arrindell, Mark Wheeler, Michelle Corbin, Dan Mareck, Emmett Noll, Sonya Shorter, and Eileen Pioli enhanced Council knowledge and created a stronger report, and I thank them greatly.  Thank you also goes to the outside agencies who graciously addressed the Council; Dan Hawkins, Vice President (Division of Federal, State and Public Affairs) of the National Association of Community Health Centers, and Bob Phillips, Director of The Robert Graham Center.  In addition, the council was able to interact with NHSC clinicians in service both through a site visit and having newly awarded loan repayors address the council.  Thank you to the Upper Cardozo site of Unity Health Care in Washington D.C. and their clinicians as well as the other clinicians in attendance at the September 2006 meeting for Loan Repayors for openly talking to the council about the operation of the NHSC from their perspective.  The council also benefited and is extremely grateful for the candid conversation with Michelle Snyder, Steve Pelovitz and Dr. Elizabeth Duke in September of 2006. Finally a big thank you goes out to the Federal staff that planned and oversaw our meetings; Tira Patterson, Jennifer Burks and Rick Smith.

The Council is also appreciative for all the believers and clinicians involved with the NHSC who further the mission and maintain enthusiasm in the endless journey to medically serve all of America’s underserved.

Sincerely,
Annette Kowal, Chair
